Team introductions

Air Space

A collection of Stanford graduate students from Applied Physics and friends. They practice once a week at Stanford. In '95, they combined with NASA Ames for NCUL E1 (as the Air Balls) and played as Air Space in NCUL E2.

Any Team Will Do

A '95 merger for NCUL IV of Apple Tandem, Thirst'n'Howl, and NASA Ames.

Apple/Tandem

A lunch-time pick-up team that includes veterans from teams like the Spin Doctors and newcomers as well. Their level of play varies from entry-level to pretty good; it all depends on who shows. They played as a full team in the early '95 NCULs (I, II, E1), then formed the core of the GOATS. The A/T team still plays in some corporate-level NCUL tourneys.
1995: NCUL I, II, E1, E2

Applied Biosystems

This team plays lunch-time pick-up, but hasn't fielded a NCUL team so far. POSSIBLY INACTIVE.

Binge

Binge joined NCUL just in time to play in the '95 NCUL V. This was their warm-up for Steve McCrosky's tournament in Boulder, Colorado the weekend of July 29th. Still around in '97, but haven't been seen in NCUL for a while.

Black Mountain

A split-off of Discus Fluid, or the next generation, depending on how you look at it. They made a strong showing in the '95 Open Sectionals, finishing 6th overall and qualifying for regionals. They don't participate as a team in most NCULs, but they may be playing in the '96 NCUL open series. To learn more, check out the very nice-looking Black Mountain web site. Team died out after 1996 season- many of the better players joined the Red Team.
1995: Open Regionals
1996: Open Sectionals (qualified for Regionals but didn't go)

Blue Cheese

A one-time merger in '95 (NCUL V?) between Soul Cheese and Red Fish Blue Fish.

Bootilicious

A coed team from Berkeley formed between the '95 and '96 seasons from part of Clog.
1996: Spring Fling

Clog

An East Bay team who played their first NCUL game in the '95 championship. In the offseason, offshoots from this team formed two coed teams: Bootilicious and Funkadisc. Rumor has it that Clog and Funkadisc will be combining for some tournaments.
1995: NCUL FInals

Davis Dirts

A coed team from Davis, combining players from local collegiate, open, and women's teams. They joined NCUL with the first tourney of the '96 season.
1996: NCUL 1
1997: NCUL 2 - Nasty Nines (two teams: the Geckos and Dingoes)

Discus Fluid

This open team broke up during the '95 season to reform as Black Mountain. They didn't compete in NCUL as a group, but many players did with other teams, notably Mission Critical, the KnuckleHeads, and No Connection.

Ebb & Flow

A long-time coed corporate-level team from Palo Alto, usually a combination of experienced players and newcomers. They consistently field more women than any other NCUL team. For more information, visit the Ebb and Flow home page.
1995: NCUL I, E1, III, IV, V, E2, Div II Sectionals, NCUL Finals
1996: NCUL 1 1997: NCUL 1, 2-Nasty Nines

El Camino

Now called Saucy Jack.
An open team, and the team to beat in the South Bay. They organized in '95 and made a very strong showing at sectionals, losing only to Double Happiness in the finals. At regionals, they were short-handed and did not do so well. Stanford alumni form the core; some of their players are from the Spin Doctors and from Double Happiness. Some of their players are scattered among NCUL teams, including the KnuckleHeads and Red Fish Blue Fish.
1995: Open Regionals

First City

This team goes by many names (so far one new name each tournament), so NCUL calls them First City just to keep it all straight. They are a pick-up team from the city (hence their name) organized by Bishop Kimm, Drew Tulchin, and others. They've been known variously as Cha-huckle (NCUL I), Bad Hair Day (II), Puppy (III), Tongue (IV), Cheek (VI, they won this tourney), and Chin Buddy (NCUL Finals). They're always a strong and well-spirited team.
1996: NCUL 2

Funkadisc

A coed team from Berkeley formed between the '95 and '96 seasons from part of Clog. They will probably merge with Clog for some '96 tournaments.
1996: Spring Fling

GOATS

(Genentech/Oracle/Apple/Tandem/SGI) This is a combination of several corporate teams that started competing together half-way through the '95 NCUL seaon. It consisted of a core of Apple/Tandem players filled out with Genacle and SGI.
1995: NCUL V, VI, Finals
1996: NCUL 1

Jo

An excellent open team from the Bay Area (mostly the city) who went to Open Regionals in '94 and '95. (no longer exists)

Knuckle-Heads (NCUL-heads)

A pick-up team of NCUL veterans, organized by Peter Moyer. Always in the running for most coed, and sometimes in the running for most in-their-own-time-zone. They put together a strong team for most of the '95 NCUL tourneys, winning the season championship.

La Chupacabra

Formerly known as MonkeyShine.
1996: Open Regionals

Meteorites

Or is it Media Rights? Anyway, this coed team from Santa Cruz has some ringers normally found on Double Happiness, the Santa Cruz Masters' Team, and some of the better women's teams in the area. They started the '96 season in the Spring Fling, and we're hoping to see them at coed NCUL events.

Mission College

A lunch-time pick-up team that joined with some Discus Fluid players for '95 NCUL as Mission Critical. Check out the Mission College home page for more information.

Mission Critical

A strong combination of Mission College and Discus Fluid players who played in NCUL in '95. This team won the '95 NCUL III (with the help of a few KnuckleHead players), but faded away late in the season. In NCUL VI, they played as 8 Is Enough.
1995: NCUL I, III, IV

MonkeyShine

An open team that has been around for many years; previously known as the Marauders. This team has a reputation for intensity, but has mellowed with age! They feature a unique offensive style with many flips and short high-release passes, and a unique defense which has been described variously as match-up zone and "Frank poaches so everyone else scrambles!" Frank Huguenard has explained many times that the defense involves lots of switching and zoning. Always a competitive team. They played for the '95 NCUL championship, and they won the '96 NCUL I Open Pool.
Changed name to
La Chupacabra in '96.
1995: NCUL I, II, III, IV, V, E3 (as MonkeyShine, Jr.), VI, Open Sectionals, NCUL Finals
1996: NCUL 1

Monterage

The coed team from Monterey, featuring a lot of speed and good spirit.
1995: Terrible 10s
1996: Spring Fling

NASA Ames (the Flying Meatballs, and Sin Dit)

A lunch-time team who made only one NCUL as a full team in '95. They merged with Air Space for two games and played as the Flying Meatballs in NCUL E1. Several players were part of Any Team Will Do for NCUL IV. For the '96 season, they're merged with a SCUM reunion team as Sin Dit.
1995: NCUL E1
1996: NCUL 1

No Connection

A collection of Stanford alums, grad students, and friends who field an entry-level team for NCUL tourneys. They're in their fourth season together, keep a low-key attitude about practice, never drill, and always welcome pick-ups. They have quite an assortment of players, and since you never really know who exactly they'll bring to a tourney, you just have to play them to see! To learn more, go to the No Connection home page. They seem to have become disconnected after the 1996 season.
1995: NCUL I, II, E1, III, IV, V, E2, VI, Finals
1996: NCUL 1, 2

Oakland Tech

In '95, this team played in NCUL I as the Bad Ankles and in NCUL II as Deaf & Blind (they usually practice at the Deaf & Blind school in Oakland, or at Oakland Tech). Organizers include Sam Kolb and Keith Kleiner. They won both NCUL I and II, but didn't field another team until Sectionals. Their players have been spotted with Soul Cheese and First City. In Sectionals, they played as Wit Huck.
1995: NCUL I, II, Sectionals

Oracle/Genentech (Genacle)

An corporate-level team that played as a team in only one NCUL in '95. They joined up with Apple/Tandem and SGI to form the GOATS, for the rest of the '95 and continue to play in '96. In '94, they played in the Ebb and Flow Invitational as Huck, Chuck, and Yuck.
1995: NCUL E1

Orange Juice

A coed team from the East Bay. At tourneys, their orange jerseys make them easy to spot. They often play under related names like Pulp Free or Country Style! Not only did they win the '96 Spring Fling, but they get my vote for best costume.
1996: Spring Fling

Perfect Teeth

A new South Bay open team formed from a core of Spastic Plastic players. Disbanded after the 1996 season, with many of the better players joining the Red Team.
1996: DUI, Fools

Presidio

A coed team from the city. They called themselves Rub da Buddha for the '96 Spring Fling.
1996: Spring Fling, NCUL 2

Random Blues

A new co-ed team in the South Bay formed at least partially from old Spastic Plastic players. Last seen, fall '96.
1996: NCUL 2

Red Fish Blue Fish

A strong South Bay coed team. They won their first NCUL appearance in '95 (IV), and travelled to several tournaments. They merged with Soul Cheese for one NCUL.
1995: NCUL IV, Terrible 10s, NCUL Finals
1996: Spring Fling, NCUL 2

Saucy Jack

Beat Double Happiness in the backdoor finals at 1996 Open Regionals in Las Vegas to make their first trip to Nationals.
1996: Open Nationals

Silicon Graphics (SGI)

A lunch-time pick-up team that hasn't fielded a NCUL team yet. Some of their players have been spotted at NCUL tourneys, though. Most recently, SGI helped fill out the GOATS.

Soul Cheese: The Next Generation

A reincarnation of the original Soul Cheese, a team with roots in Orinda over in the East Bay. They played in a few NCULs in '95 and merged with Red Fish Blue Fish once as Blue Cheese.

Spastic Plastic

A South Bay open team that played in the '94 and '95 seasons. Spastic Plastic formed after Winter League 93-94 out of a core of Ebb & Flow players and improved enough to win the Beer Bracket of the '95 Open Sectionals (over MonkeyShine!). In the 95-96 offseason, they split up, forming Perfect Teeth and Random Blues.
1995: NCUL I, II, III, IV, V, E3, VI, Open Sectionals, NCUL Finals
For more information, visit the Spastic Plastic home page

Spinderella

A developing South Bay women's team. They also form a coed team for some tournaments, the Websters.

Spin Doctors

A veteran open team from the South Bay. They were the top team in the South Bay not so long ago. For the '95 season, they made several appearances as the Which Doctors. They now have broken up. Players can be found all over NCUL (with more than a few playing with Apple/Tandem and the GOATS. Some of their veterans have joined Black Mountain, and one was recently spotted with MonkeyShine.
1995: Open Sectionals (as the Which Doctors)

Stew

A coed city team for the '96 NCUL season. They have a lot of names for themselves, including Superfriends, Psychofriends, and Group Therapy. They're not calling themselves Schizofriends (yet).
1996: NCUL 1

Thirst'n'Howl (Fremont)

An open team from Fremont. These guys probably have the strongest team at NCULs when tournaments begin, but usually end the day short of players. They've beaten most of the best teams in NCUL, and appeared in the finals of NCUL III. They haven't been spotted yet in '96.
1995: NCUL I, II, III, V, VI

Wackadoo

A coed team from the city that began playing with NCUL late in '95. They improved quickly, winning the NCUL corporate-level championship. They should develop into a strong team for '96. There may be a split in the works; they had so many players in the '96 Spring Fling, they fielded a second team, Wackatoo, (described as Slackadoo!).
1995: NCUL VI, Div II Sectionals, NCUL Finals
1996: Spring Fling, NCUL 2
1997: NCUL 1

Websters

A coed team from the South Bay, formed from a core of the women's team Spinderella. Most of the players now play with the FlamingO's and some with RippIt.
1996: Spring Fling, NCUL 2, GRUBWest(Monterrey)

United Flyers Of Sonoma

A strong coed team from Sonoma County. They host great tournaments, and have made several appearances in the South Bay over the past couple of seasons, including back-to-back performances at the Spring Fling and NCUL I to open the '96 season. They won the NCUL I Co-ed Pool.
1996: Spring Fling, NCUL 1
