Wackadoo finished as the top Type-B team, beating the GOATS, Ebb &
Flow, and finally No Connection.
The captains over-ruled the original plans (NCUL is such a
democracy!), so the Type-A teams formed into two 3-team pools.
The top two teams from each pool advanced to the semis. One
pool contained the veteran NCUL teams from last season. In
this pool, the KnuckleHeads beat MonkeyShine by one point in a
time-capped game, and both those teams beat Spastic Plastic in close
games. Red Fish Blue Fish kept their undefeated NCUL record
going in the other Type-A pool, Chin Buddy (the First City team)
also qualified for the NCUL semis, and Clog (a new NCUL team
from Berkeley) finished last.
The KnuckleHeads qualified for the final in a 12-10 game over Chin
Buddy, while MonkeyShine, playing with no subs, surprised Red Fish
Blue Fish and beat them 11-8. To complete the sweep in cross-pool
games of old NCUL teams over new, Spastic Plastic beat Clog in the
beer bracket.
The final was a re-match that looked for a while like MonkeyShine's
revenge. They were up 10-6 over the KnuckleHeads, and then 12-9 in
a 13-point game. Facing game point, the KnuckleHeads scored 5
straight to win 14-12. Chris Sherwood (aka Woody) got an end-zone
block at 12-9, and then Tal Tversky (El Camino) got one at 13-12.
For the final NCUL point of the 1995 season, Tal Tversky tossed
a score to Gus Gonzalez (US-Tampico), giving the KnuckleHeads a
14-12 victory and the 1995 NCUL championship.
Gus's catch brought to an end a season that started way back in
April when Vas Ketavarapu of Apple/Tandem scored the first point of
the NCUL season.
NCUL I
NCUL I, took place at Roble Field on Sunday, April 30th. Eight teams were
divided into an Ambitious Pool and a Mellow Pool. The weather remained
grey and threatening all day (it was such a wet, lingering spring this year),
and even settled into a soft, but steady rain by the end of the day. But
the players seemed to love it - Roble was softer and greener than anyone
could remember. Splitting the pools by level of play didn't work as well as
planned, since there weren't enough entry-level teams to fill the Mellow
Pool. The City team (Cha-huckle) and Oakland team (the Bad Ankles)
dominated the Mellow Pool, and Oakland was left standing when they finally
faced off. Mission Critical won the Ambitious Pool with a 3-1 record, but
since the Bad Ankles won the only cross-pool game of the day to finish 5-0,
the Ankles were declared the winners.NCUL I results

NCUL II
NCUL II had been scheduled at Roble for Saturday, May 20th, but these
plans fell through at the last minute. So the tournament took place at
the Sunnyvale Baylands on the 21st instead. The last minute changes
took a toll on attendance, and only six teams participated. But the
tourney was a lot of fun as usual. The Baylands stayed calm (for a
change), the fields were lush and soft, and while the skies stayed
gloomy all day, we stayed dry. For the second tourney in a row, the
Oakland team (now going as Deaf & Blind) wound up on top, this time with
a 3-1 record.NCUL II results

NCUL E1
NCUL E1 was held at Roble Field on Saturday, June 3d. This was a special
entry-level tournament that drew five teams, three of which were new to
NCUL. NCUL regulars included Ebb & Flow and No Conection. New teams
included Oracle/Genentech (Genacle!), Air Space, and NASA Ames. For the
first two games, NASA and Air Space combined as the Air Balls, and when
the Air Space players headed home, NASA managed to field their own team,
the Flying Meatballs. The weather was sunny and beautiful and Ebb & Flow
won the tournament with 3 wins and one loss. Most of the games were very
close, hard fought, and played with great spirit. NCUL E1 results

NCUL III was played at Roble Field on Saturday, June 24th, during the
record-breaking heatwave experienced in the Bay Area. San Jose
temperatures got up to 103 F, but the official temperature in Palo Alto
was only 96 F. This had to be an underestimate; it was HOT. Eight
teams played, and for the first time this year, we finished the tournament
with a real championship game. Mission Critical beat everyone in Pool B and

NCUL V
NCUL V, was held at Roble Field Saturday, 22 July. In Greg Sloan's absence,
Bharat Mediratta, Chris Smith, Annie Peterson, and Stefan Rosner ran the
show without a hitch. As is the norm, the weather was very cooperative.
And fears that Roble had been double-booked with softball players, forcing
the tourney to use only three or even two fields turned out to be unnecessary.
The tourney organizers came up with a new field set-up to give the softball
players some room, and they were very cooperative. The tournament drew 8 or 9
teams (depending on when you counted), making the organizers' lives extra
challenging. Bharat made the best of the situation, allowing for cross-pool
games in rounds 2 and 4. The only draw-back to the day was the large number
of capped games to keep the tourney on schedule. When the dust settled,
the KnuckleHeads had beaten Spastic Plastic in the championship.NCUL V results

NCUL E2
NCUL E2 was the first tourney of our 2-day NCUL double-header. Four
teams played at Roble Field on Saturday, August 5th, for the second
special NCUL for entry-level teams. The weather was beautiful (but
what do you expect?), and everyone had a great day of ultimate. All
the games were close. Most were decided by two points, and the biggest
point spread was four. After the four-team round-robin, three teams
were tied with 2 wins and a loss, and among these, Apple/Tandem had
the best point differential. But we'll never really be sure who won,
since the teams seemed more intent on chowing the watermelons that
Apple/Tandem brought than playing a final!NCUL E2 results

NCUL E3
NCUL E3, played Sunday, August 6th, at the Sunnyvale Baylands, was the
second tourney in our NCUL double-header weekend. Usually, the "E"
stands for "entry-level," but this time, all of the teams were
definitely open-level. Maybe "E" stood for "extra." Spastic Plastic
and Thirst'n'Howl played with full teams, while Mission Critical and
MonkeyShine played with smaller squads. MonkeyShine brought a team
filled out with two high-school-age players and called themselves
MonkeyShine, Jr. Mission Critical played with no subs all day,
going 6 on 6 in their first and last games. The lack of subs made
little difference, and they won all three of their games handily.
The day started cloudy, but was sunny and hot by the time things
finished up. And those Bayland winds picked up for the later
games, so teams played zone, and most of the games wound up being closer
(or at least longer) than the scores would indicate.NCUL E3 results

Drew and EJ organized this BACU fundraiser which drew 15 coed teams from
all over the Bay Area. They held the tournament at Palmer College in
Cupertino on March 16th. While the fields were a little worn, the rainy
weather broke and everyone enjoyed beautiful sunny skies. Orange Juice,
from the East Bay, won the championship. Several of the
teams at this tourney had banded together for the event, but several more
will probably join NCUL in the weeks to come.NCUL 1
The NCUL season got off to a great start on March 17th at Roble Field.
Eight teams participated, including new NCUL teams from Sonoma (the UFOs),
Davis (the Dirts), and the city (Group Therapy). We formed a coed pool
of four teams (these three and Ebb and Flow), and an open pool with
a new NASA Ames team (Sin Dit), No Connection, the GOATS, and MonkeyShine.
At one time or another, all of these teams were also playing coed (except
MonkeyShine). The UFOs won the coed pool (although Group Therapy,
who lost a close game to them in the first round, pleaded for a final
to even the score); MonkeyShine won the open pool.NCUL 1 results

NCUL 2 was on Saturday, March 6th at the Sunnyvale Baylands,
which would have been better called the Sunnyvale Swamplands.
Seven coed teams played, including three new NCUL teams: Presidio from
the city and the Websters (coed version of Spinderella) and Random Blues
from the south bay. RedFish BlueFish and Random Blues both went undefeated,
but never played eachother. The Fish were declared the victors by comparing

NCUL 4
NCUL 4 was another big NCUL success. The Baylands weren't as
soupy, the sun was out, and we had eight teams playing. Four
teams played in the open pool: Black Mountain, Perfect Teeth,
MonkeyShine, and the Funkydudes (from Berkeley). We had
advertised the tournament as an OPEN tourney, but several coed
teams expressed an interest. Since we were unable to fill our
8 slots with open teams, four coed teams were able to play:
Ebb and Flow, Wackadoo, Mismatch Blues (a merger of the Random
Blues and the Misfits), and Whatever (Drew Tulchin's coed team
from the city). For the first time ever, we actually played on
four fields at the Baylands. There really is room!
Whatever won the coed pool, and Black Mountain won the open pool.

NCUL 5
What about NCUL 5? Well, six teams showed, and when it ended the results
looked like this:
NOATs was a combo of No Connection and GOATs.

NCUL 3
Open tournament run by Chris Illes.
We had fine weather this last Sunday at Sunnyvale Baylands. It never got
too hot, but the wind did start up earlier than usual.
We had all 10 teams turn out. We played a round robin in two pools with
at least one crossover game at the end between the winner of one pool and
one of the leaders of the other pool.
Calistona won that game and seems to be the overall winner having not
lost all day long. Unfortunately the dry erase markers stopped working
during the day and I don't have all of the scores or even all of the
winners for the day. Eh, who cares? We all had fun.
A few things to point out.
We did seem to have a few more injuries than usual for a NCUL, mostly
twisted ankles, knees, and banged up wrists. There was also a shoulder
injured and one near concussion (hope it wasn't a concussion, how is that
girl feeling these days?).
While the near concussion was caused by a collision between a man and a
women, I don't believe they were guarding each other and, to me, it
looked like the woman was being the agressive one who ran into the man.
This collision alone caused little harm, but hitting the ground after
that was painful, banging her head and knocking the wind out of her.
Thank goodness for the thick, soft grass at Baylands.
BTW, the grass was drier than usual (i.e. not swampy anywhere) but a bit
long, hope they mow it soon. Also hope that tourneys 2 weekends in a row
don't hurt the grass or our relationships with the Sunnyvale Parks
department.
Lastly, we had an unusual amount of stuff left over. I have 2 T-shirts
and 3 discs. I can identify the owners of 2 discs (Mitch and Emil). I'll
post more info on them in a follow up but if your missing something, ask.
There were some more clothes and a pair of roller blades left that didn't
seem to belong to anyone from NCUL so I left them for the parks people to
find. If you are missing something you should also contact them.
That's about all for now. I hope that we have at least one more open NCUL
before Sectionals come up in the fall, give the teams a bit more chance
to practice.
